The 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup was the 14th edition of the Hockey World Cup, the quadrennial world championship for men’s national field hockey teams organized by the FIH. It was held from 28 November to 16 December 2018, at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, India. The inauguration ceremony which was held on 27 November 2018, witnessed the biggest ever drone flying show in India. I was privileged to be a part of it!
Belgium won the tournament for the first time after defeating the Netherlands 3–2 in the final on a penalty shoot-out after a 0–0 draw. Defending champions Australia won the third place match by defeating England 8–1.

Recently I read in the news that India’s longest Rail and Road bridge is coming up in Assam. This is the Bogibeel Bridge which is going to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 25, 2018 as a Christmas and New Year gift to the entire North East. But what is the real story of the making of the Bogibeel bridge? Read on to know more!
Bridging River Brahmaputra has always been a daunting task. The river has been traditionally considered extremely difficult for bridging due to various reasons including it’s ferocious and unpredictable behaviour, high currents and turbulent waters, widespread erosion of the banks, very short working period and high seismicity and remoteness of the area. On top of that, the construction is only possible 4 months in a year due to the heavy monsoon and melting of glaciers in summer.
With the width ranging from 1.2 km to 18 km, Brahmaputra river has been bridged 4 times in past. Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) holds the distinction of being the only company which has built two of these bridges and has now built the 5th bridge too at Bogibeel, near Dibrugarh.
HCC has always been at the forefront of building bridges in Assam as they built the Saraighat bridge way back in 1962 near Guwahati. This bridge was opened to traffic in April 1962 by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
HCC was pivotal in also constructing the Kolia Bhomora Setu at Tezpur which is a pre-stressed concrete road bridge that connects Sonitpuron on the north bank with Nagaon district on the south bank. The length of this bridge is 3015 m, and its construction went on from 1981 to 1987. This was very important bridge in the history of Assam.
HCC in joint venture with DSD Brouckenbau GmbH, Germany and VNR Infrastructures Ltd received order from Northeast Frontier Railway to construct the superstructure of Bogibeel Rail-cum-road Bridge in November 2011.
It was not an easy task to build the Bogibeel bridge. HCC aced it by doing a lot of things very innovatively. HCC team came-up with a solution of pulling the steel trusses with a set of jacks and winches on the pillars. This eliminated the need to enter the river, which was often turbulent during monsoons. Besides, it also ensured safer working conditions, precluded the mobilisation of giant setup on either side of the river having a width of 4.8 km and accelerated the pace of the project.
RVR Kishore, project director of the Hindustan Construction Company Ltd., recently mentioned that the location of the Bogibeel Bridge falls in Seismic Zone-V. In Indian history, Zone V has been most vulnerable to earthquakes with magnitudes in excess of 7.0. In order to offer good stability to the heavy spans (1700 MT), they are provided with seismic restrainers. This ensures that the Bogibeel bridge can withstand earthquake up to magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale and beyond. This is really good planning by HCC team!
Normally in a steel bridge construction, bolts & rivets are used, which needs periodic replacement due to shear failure over traffic loads. Construction of trusses using welding makes the connection between the components a permanent one, thereby eliminating the above failures. Welded bridge not only reduced the maintenance cost but also adds to the longevity of the superstructure. It is estimated that Bogibeel Bridge is durable and serviceable for next 120 years!
Railways have traditionally used steel rocker-roller bearings for bridges with larger spans. For the Bogibeel Bridge, the initial plan was to use Pot-PTFE bearing with metallic pins and guide bearings. However, it was found out that the size of bearing required for taking the anticipated load cannot be accommodated in the pier cap, hence Spherical Bearings have been used.
The superstructure of Bogibeel Bridge has been constructed using a special grade copper-bearing steel plates in order to reduce corrosion. The average annual relative humidity in Bogibeel is 90% which goes up to 96% to 97%. To further reduce corrosion due to the excessive humidity, a complex Corrosion Protection System specific to different components of the bridge has been implemented during the construction of the bridge.
Overall, Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) has created history by creating a modern marvel of engineering – India’s longest Rail and Road bridge – Bogibeel Bridge in Assam!

Recently I was invited to cover the 4th season of Krishnapatnam Port Golden Eagles Golf Championship’s Bangalore leg at the Prestige Golfshire Course, Bengaluru. The IT hub is the first of the four venues slated for this year’s series. This has been my 3rd year of association with Krishnapatnam Port Golden Eagles Golf Championship since I covered it in 2016 in Bangalore and in Pune.
Legendary cricketers, Mr. Kapil Dev and Brian Lara were the key highlights of the game as they enjoyed a tee off jointly on the lush green course. The tournament witnessed participation from avid golfers across India. It was a great opportunity for us to meet them too and discuss about how they feel Golf is more prominent in their lives now that they have retired from active cricket.
We also got to interact with 12 time Women’s Golf Champion Ms. Sharmila Nicollet along with other international golfers Ashlyn Ramsey and Nick Taylor. They were all present on the occasion to back the tournament and interact with the other participating players. Popular actor Madhavan was also a part of the tournament and teed off with Mr.C. Sasidhar, MD Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited

Almost all rides involve motion/moving parts. That’s why they request guests to refrain from wearing long or loose garments like Saree/Dupatta/Shawls/Scarves/ Hijab/Mafta/Habit etc. in any of the rides, as it could lead to potential harm to themselves or others.

Along with good food, we devoured some excellent Champagne and Red Wine.
Things I tried were Mushroom Ramen, Tofu Carpaccio, Chef’s Signature Assorted Sushi, BBQ Mushroom Dimsum, Rock Corn Tempura & Tofu Skewers. Stir-Fried Greens and Assorted Mushroom Saute along with Vegetable Yaki Udon and Yakimeshi. I savored the special selection of Desserts, Five Spiced Chocolate Mousse with Orange Compote.
Chef Dolphy Lobo informed us that the Norwegian salmon comes from the famed market in Japan, the macha and more. There are very few serving the robatayaki on charcoal, most offer gas options which is what makes them different. Chef Lobo was earlier with Delhi’s Mansingh, Wasabi by Morimoto, and before that with Taj Palace Mumbai.
Recently I was invited to the launch of the Renaissance Bengaluru Race Course Hotel which is a part of the Marriott International. Recently, I was in Bali with my family and had a great time there. We stayed at Hard Rock Hotel Bali which is considered to be a superior first-class hotel in the heart of the Kuta shopping district, just across the street from the beautiful beaches and having a variety of recreational facilities suitable for teens and families.
Hard Rock Hotel Bali is built along 3 hectares of beachfront land at Kuta Beach. It is a paradise for rock enthusiasts, and when you step into the Hard Rock Hotel, you quickly blend into the rock and roll. It is a famous Holiday Surf Hotel, witnessing the brilliant rock culture of the past 40 years. To commemorate rock and roll artists from the 1950s to the late 90s and the music, fashion, and art of each stage. The hotel’s walls are decorated with pictures, memorabilia, and portraits from Rocking ‘Tots to Grunge Grand Dads, and this is Asia’s first music-themed resort hotel.
The room we stayed in was quite spacious and it even had a small guitar embroidered on the pillowcase, the room has an old-fashioned vibe. The hotel rooms were clean and tidy and the staff treated our children very kindly. All rooms were equipped with bath and shower, wall-mounted TV, CD and cassette player, free coffee and tea making facilities and mini-bar.
My family loved the pool area, and the pool was clean and watched by lifeguards at all times. Water activities are fun for all ages and staff gets people involved. Music is up until late night but well, it’s Hard Rock. The hotel has an in-house band which is doing a live show every night, playing top 40 and rock hits, one of a complimentary bonus for staying in this hotel. It’s also a perfect place for rocking young couples and music lovers. After you have enjoyed the music, just want to be alone for a while, and you will find the beautiful beach right in front of the hotel.
For fitness and entertainment lovers, this is a first class place. You are free to slug in the pool, splashing cold water on your body, enjoying the hotel’s wonderful rock spa or rock climbing. The hotel has a standard in-room fitness center, fully equipped with sauna and steam room. In terms of dining, there is a wide range of cuisines to choose from; each with a unique style, and most uniquely, you can choose to enjoy it in the beautiful landscape.
Breakfast in the hotel was amazing, and you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and the pool! Music inside the hotel bar was rocking, but also kind nightclubbing to hear music! Every night in the bar they will have activities, for those who want to relax in the hotel is an excellent choice.
The hotel has meeting and banquet halls catering to a wide range of business travelers, hosting corporate seminars or organizing various themed events such as private banquets or banquets for up to 400 guests.
At Hard Rock Hotel Bali, family holidays are always fun for children and Lil Hard Rock Kids Club will lead children into fun gaming worlds such as reading, Department of Health, Balinese dance or treasure hunt. There are always exciting games that are supervised by experienced staff at the Lil Hard Rock Kids’ Club. Very decent price for what you are getting at this place. You can spot Kuta Beach just across the road, and the hotel is close to shopping and nightlife to meet different needs.

On our recent visit to Bali, we stayed at the spectacular Samsara Ubud Resort located in the Ubud area of Bali. This 5-star hotel is easily accessible from the airport, which is only 40 km away. It is 7 km from Ubud Botanical Garden, Tirta Empul Temple, and Neka Museum. There are mountains and parks within walking distance of the Samsara Ubud Villa. Thanks to its excellent location, the hotel offers easy access to the city’s must-see sites.
Arriving at the Samsara Ubud, the peaceful and relaxed atmosphere greeted us very warmly. Our stay for the evening was at the one-bedroom pool villa. It had all amenities ensuring a wonderful level of comfort. The room featured a private balcony and had modern decor with tiled floors, and teak furniture, a private space heated pool with rainforest views, a large bedroom with luxurious bed, and a private bathroom which had a deep soaking tub with both indoor and outdoor showers.
It is also home to all the conveniences you need if your preference is fitness: The hiking trails, yoga room, fitness center, sauna, outdoor swimming pool are undoubtedly perfect for unwinding after a long day. Take in yourself a relaxing treat and enjoy some massages, body treatments, and facials. Throughout the day you can enjoy the soothing atmosphere and leisure facilities by the outdoor pool and fitness facilities.
After relaxing in the pool, you can ease at the restaurant and enjoy the bar atmosphere. You can also dine in the comfort of your room and enjoy your meal in the room. Have a drink at the bar/lounge or a poolside bar.
Our first morning at Samsara Ubud was greeted with views of the expanse of green forest, a blue infinity pool visible from the room and a very cool air also refreshing. No waste of time we set an exclusive start to the restaurant “The Kelusa Restaurant” which is an all-day dining restaurant that provides breakfast, lunch up to dinner.
The location of this restaurant is perfectly under the lobby of the villa, the expanse of green forest landscape is a very visible light of this restaurant with a peaceful atmosphere and accompanied by music, the more we create a comfortable. The Kelusa Restaurant said the choice of Unlimited Breakfast style, so from the selection of breakfast offerings we were able to determine what we want for breakfast. Very impressive right guys, the overall breakfast experience is very satisfying, a delicious and mixed meal with a great view.
We also set up for the early dinner back at The Kelusa Restaurant. This restaurant looks very glowing from a distance, and when we arrived at the restaurant, we were warmly welcomed back. This restaurant looks charming with its blend of lamps. Satisfied with the food we returned to the villa to rest.
Samsara Ubud Resort which is newly opened have thought of everything, given attention to all tiny details to make sure visit a memorable experience. The staff was so friendly and welcoming; they honestly tried to remember our names. It is an ideal base for travelers looking for the charm and comfort of the city of Bali.
