After 2 successful semi finals of the Chilis‘ 1st Indian cookoff at their Bangalore outlets at Phoenix Market City and Orion mall, action shifted to the biggest and newest Chilis in India which was on the 100 feet road Indiranagar. After tough competition, 9 finalists were selected from over 60 participants based on the way their Chilis tasted, were presented and of course upon its texture!
As the day of reckoning, October 19th 2014 dawned upon us, all the 9 finalists and their support systems like their families were on dot at 7am at Slurp studio in Indiranagar where they had their cooking stations and had to prepare their Chilis not just for judging by celebrity judges but also by general public. Entire morning was spent by finalists perfecting their dishes with the help of Slurp studio chefs and of course celebrity judge and culinary champion Abhijeet Gomare from Chilis India.
The action then shifted to the spanking new Chilis on 100feet road Indiranagar where lot of general public and participants’ friends and families had gathered to taste the Chilis and accordingly rate them and vote for their favorite one among them. All roads on Sunday afternoon lead there as it was very well promoted both on traditional and social media like FM Radio and Facebook respectively.
I was privileged to be invited to be a part of the Project Aloft Star India Regional Finals at Aloft Bengaluru Cessna Business Park towards end of September 2014. Unsigned bands and artists in Asia were invited to be a part of the contest by uploading their original videos to MTV Asia website. After uploading, they had to get votes from fans and friends so that they could be in the finals. 40% of public voting plus 60% of decision by MTV decided who would be the 5 finalists who would take part in India Regional Finals at the brand new Aloft Bengaluru Cesnna Business Park in Bangalore.
5 finalists in Bangalore for the Project Aloft Star India Regional finals were Boby Techi, Keith Castelino, Natania Lalwani, Rahul Jain and Stebin Ben. The idea was to promote local up-and-coming music talents and give them a global platform to perform their music on! Before the regional finals, we got an opportunity to interact with the bands on an Unplugged level where we could hear their stories and also understand their music in a much better way.
Regional finals happened at W Xyz bar at Aloft Bengaluru Cessna Business Park. The lighting was perfectly done and the drinks were very well organized by Diageo. All the finalists created some wonderful original music and also enthralled the audience with their musical repertoire. The crowd favorites were Rahul Jain, Natania Lalwani and Boby Techi.
I have been staying in Bangalore since 13 years and one of the icons of Bangalore city for me always has been The Gateway Hotel on Residency Road near MG road. I used to always admire the quaint little hotel with amazing restaurants and would wonder how many years it has served Bangalore and it’s patrons. I was pleasantly surprised to know recently that it’s been in Bangalore for 25 years now! I was invited along with family and friends for a sit-down Chef’s Special dinner on 10th October 2014.
Our evening started at the lounge bar at The Gateway hotel which is called Sphyre. We were served some amazing starters along with delectable cocktails. My favorite was the Northern Gate Kakori Kebab which was rich, succulent lamb mince which is named after a hamlet near Lucknow. This would just melt in mouth as we were having it!
Another favorite was crunchy fried prawn nest. It had the right amount of bite and kick to it which is required for starters to go along with great drinks. One more interesting starter was the maddur vade which was served which had a unique Bangalore touch to it. This was deep fried flat patties made of rice flour, semolina, maida, sliced onion, curry leaves, grated coconut and asafoetida and named after a sleepy town between Bangalore and Mysore.
My partner-in-crime Nivedith Gajapathy and I did the video review of the Oktoberfest menu at The United Sports Bar & Grill thanks to towntrendz.com team. Here is the video.. if you want to just read more details, you can read the blog post below!
We also took the Beer Bong Challenge and had a chat with the Manager and Chef of The United Sports Bar & Grill about the Oktoberfest celebrations. Please see the video here.
Chili’s American Grill and Bar, which is one of the institutions of American food in India has announced India’s 1st Chili cook-off at their 2 existing restaurants in Bangalore which are in Phoenix Market City, Whitefield and Orion Mall, Rajajinagar. The culmination of the semi finals at these 2 locations would be at the grand finale which would be conducted at Chili’s 3rd and till now largest restaurant in India which has recently opened on Indiranagar 100 feet road.
The registrations for India’s 1st Chili Cook-off happened offline at Chili’s restaurants in Bangalore and there was also a Master Class which happened where Chef Abhijeet Gomare explained the process of cooking Chili to many enthusiasts. There were participants who were interested in both vegetarian version and beef version of the Chili. Chef Abhijeet gave a live demonstration of both types of Chili using world class Kitchen Aid equipments.
There was interest by both young and old at the Chili’s masterclass which happened on consecutive days at the flagship restaurants at both Phoenix Market City and Orion Mall. Participants who registered got Chili’s branded cap and apron and also got some amazing vouchers from sponsors like Jean-Claude Biguine Salon & Spa, Contiki Holidays and KitchenAid. Thanks to burrp! Bangalore team, recently visited the 3 Monkeys Brew Pub in Gopalan Signature Mall on Old Madras Road which is arguably the biggest brewery in town with a huge island bar inside which the brewing also happens! We visited just in time for the Oktoberfest celebrations where they had on tap 7 handcrafted beers with amazing menu which transported us back to Germany itself!
Initially we were explained the process of beer making or the Brewing with malted Barley, Hops and Yeast. It was informative session where we got hands on experience of how Bangalore’s biggest brewery makes its beers in full view of it’s patrons!
Brew-master Martin explained to us the entire process of making beer at the brewery and how they have 7 different handcrafted beers on tap all the time! For Oktoberfest at 3 Monkeys Brew pub, the official beer was the Doppelbock which is one of Germany’s most popular beers. It is high on alcohol content as much as permissible by Indian government regulations and is loaded with the goodness of malt. Many Germans consider Doppelbock beer as a meal in itself!
